Academic All-Stars began in 1983 as a way to give recognition to outstanding academic achievers. The first banquet in 1984 honored 30 students, and the four top students received cash scholarships totaling $200 each. Today, more than 70 students are honored, and scholarship awards are as high as $2000 each. Since 1983, 1104 students have received scholarships totaling nearly $660,000.   In its early years, scholarships were given for academic performance, leadership, self-direction, and extra-curricular activities related to the student’s academic field. Soon, however, community service also became a criterion of achievement.

Academic All-Stars are honored in nine academic categories; All-Around, Computers & Technology, Foreign Language, Language Arts, Mathematics, Performing Arts, Science, Social Science, and Visual Arts.
